Here we see the premiere exhibition of Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york, a video magazine on contemporary art that is intended to bring news and views from the New York Art world to the public outside New York’s art center. As the beginning of this innovative series, we see Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, Ned Smyth, and Mel Bochner, all major figures who defined art in the late part of the 70s and early 80s. The program ends with a never before seen interview with Joseph Beuys.
Currently, Paul Tschinkel’s ART/new york has produced 74 episodes. This series is a historic record of the New York art movements which defined the art world during the late 20th century. It includes interviews with such prominent artists as Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, Chuck Close, Julian Schnabel, Louise Bourgeois, and Alice Neel before they became the famous icons of today. This primary source footage is supplemented with text and interviews by respected critics and art historians like Peter Schjedahl, Tom Wolf, Marc H. Miller, Roberta Smith, Lowery Sims, Robert Storr, among many others. We are proud to make ART/new york available to you online for the first time, and hope it will provide to you insight into this now famous era in art history.
