Lisa Yuskavage: Transgressions

For digital streaming licenses and institutional use, please contact [email protected].

Lisa Yuskavage is one of the most intriguing and provocative American artists working today. A superb painter, who was educated at the Yale School of Art, she makes paintings that both celebrate and exploit the voluptuous and sensual qualities of the female body which bring to mind the “high art” qualities of Rubens, Degas, Monet, and even Picasso. Her paintings depict women in a variety of poses, situations, stances and conditions, which question our attitudes toward sex and sexuality. Blending the sublime with the banal, Lisa brings to art a dialectic that both fascinates and provokes. Seen on this DVD are several recent exhibitions of her paintings at the David Zwirner Gallery in Chelsea and visits to her studios in New York.

Included is an in-depth interview with Lisa Yuskavage, commentary by critic/curator Christian Viveros-Faune and Claudia Gould, The Daniel W. Dietrich ll Director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania.
